Remembering Quincy Jones: A Jazz Legend and Musical Pioneer.
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) was a star-studded, nostalgia-fueled night, with female pop powerhouses taking center stage. With Taylor Swift’s infectious award-show dance moves, Chappell Roan’s bold VMA debut, Sabrina Carpenter’s out-of-this-world moment with an extraterrestrial-themed performance, and Katy Perry soaring through the air while performing a medley of her biggest hits, the reigning queens of pop owned the night.
Some of music’s biggest male artists also lit up the show: Lenny Kravitz performed an exciting new version of his iconic hit “Fly Away,” while Eminem opened the ceremony with high-energy performances of “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me.” Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion hosted the night, bringing her signature style and charisma to the stage.
Taylor Swift’s night was especially moving. When she accepted the first award, she took a heartfelt moment to remember the victims of the September 11 tragedy, sharing, “I woke up in New York on September 11th, 23 years ago, and I’ve been thinking about everyone who lost a loved one. The most significant part of tonight is everyone we lost.”
Swift walked away with a record-breaking seven awards, including Video and Artist of the Year, surpassing Beyoncé as the biggest winner in MTV VMA history with 30 total trophies. Her song “Fortnight,” a collaboration with Post Malone from her recent album The Tortured Poets Department, won Best Collaboration and took home the night’s top honor, Video of the Year.
Katy Perry also delivered a crowd-pleasing medley of her hits, including “I Kissed A Girl,” “Dark Horse,” and “Firework,” before accepting the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, MTV’s version of a lifetime achievement accolade. And Chappell Roan, a rising star who won Best New Artist last year, dazzled the audience once again and dedicated her success to the drag queens who inspired her, a tribute to her roots in performing for small crowds.
From poignant tributes to powerhouse performances, the 2024 VMAs proved to be a memorable celebration of music, emotion, and artistry that fans won’t forget!
