From January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2023, Mauritius celebrated over a million tourist bookings—a milestone driven by joint marketing efforts from the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Louis Steven Obeegadoo, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), and private sector partners. Despite challenges, Mauritius continues to captivate travelers worldwide, with tourism accounting for nearly 24% of the country’s GDP. The government has set an ambitious target of 1.4 million visitors for 2023.
Expressing his gratitude, MTPA Director Arvind Bundhun remarked, “I want to thank our hospitality partners for their dedication. This milestone is proof that together, we can overcome any challenge. Mauritius is once again one of the world’s most inspiring destinations, and we look forward to welcoming both new and returning guests this year to experience our island’s diverse offerings.”
As global travel reopens, Mauritius is reasserting itself as a top choice for leisure, business, and extended stays. The launch of the Premium Visa scheme in 2022 has successfully attracted digital nomads, with a thousand visas issued by year’s end. Additionally, foreign homebuyers were enticed by real estate schemes granting permanent residency, creating a unique opportunity for international brands, investors, and long-term visitors to make Mauritius their home base.
“Mauritius is perfectly positioned to meet the growing demand for sustainable, culturally rich destinations,” Bundhun added. “We’re thrilled to surpass the one million visitor mark and are ready to reach our ambitious goals for 2023.
